Jasminum sambac, the small jasmine of Javanese weddings and of jasmine tea
Melati
Melati is Jasminum sambac, the small, many-petalled jasmine that is strung into garlands for weddings on Java and laid in temples on Bali. Since 1990 it has been one of Indonesia's three national flowers.
It is picked as a bud and opens in the evening, when its scent is strongest. Tea makers lay the open flowers beside green tea overnight, let the leaves take the scent, and dry the tea again in the morning. This perfume starts there: green tea and bergamot, then the flower itself.
Orange blossom keeps it from turning heavy, and white musk holds it close to the skin once the candles are out.
